Blessed With ThisAbility: The Story of Craig Woodard Jr.
Craig Sr. recalls that the day after his son was born was the moment he discovered why he himself was born. It was, in his words, the day his purpose became clear—a living reflection of Mark Twain’s words:
“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”— Mark Twain
For Craig Woodard Sr., that second day came not at a graduation or career milestone—but the morning after his son, Craig Jr., was born with Down syndrome. In that quiet, uncertain moment, he didn’t just become a father. He found his purpose.
This is the story of a boy who changed the definition of ability—and a father who discovered the why behind his life.

When Craig Jr. entered the world in 2014, his parents, Craig Sr. and Christine Woodard, were introduced to a journey they hadn't anticipated. Yet, as Craig Sr. reflects in his book:
“These angels chose us to be their parents, and this book will show you that your special journey has just begun.”
— Down Syndrome, Blessed with ThisAbility: Now Imagine Life Without Me
This perspective transformed their experience, revealing that their son's presence was not a challenge but a blessing.
Celebrating Abilities
From a young age, Craig Jr.'s vibrant spirit was evident. His laughter, creativity, and genuine connections with others highlighted a unique ability to touch hearts. Craig Jr’s picture was showcased on the Jumbotron in Times Square, New York City in 2023, as part of a national campaign to raise awareness for Down syndrome.
His vibrant personality and talents have been showcased in various community events. Notably, he participated in the "Down Right Perfect Fashion Show" at Lamb Elementary School, walking the runway and captivating audiences. Such events highlight the importance of inclusion and the celebration of diverse abilities.
From Awareness to Advocacy
Motivated by their personal experience, Craig Sr. became deeply involved in the Down syndrome community. His dedication led to the establishment of the Down Syndrome Association of Tampa Bay (DSATB) in 2018, where he serves as Executive Director and President.
Sharing Stories Through Literature
Understanding the power of storytelling, Craig Sr. authored the book Down Syndrome, Blessed with ThisAbility: Now Imagine Life Without Me. This compilation features narratives from seven families, including his own, offering insights into the joys and challenges of raising children with Down syndrome. The book serves as a beacon of hope and a resource for families navigating similar journeys.
“These unique journeys will touch your heart and uncloud your future.”

Vision for the Future
Recognizing Craig Jr.'s passion for photography, Craig Sr. envisions a future where his son can channel this interest into a profession. He has expressed aspirations of establishing "Down To Smile Photography," a business that would not only empower Craig Jr. but also challenge societal perceptions about the capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome.
Craig Woodard Jr. was born with something the world once called a limitation. But through love, faith, and the power of purpose, he became a symbol of what’s possible when we stop seeing a diagnosis—and start seeing the person.
From Tampa to Times Square, from a hospital room to the hearts of thousands, this story is no longer about Down syndrome.
It’s about the power of one life.
It’s about rewriting the narrative.
It’s about purpose.
